The Camping Trip That Got Rained Out |

I’m not an outdoor guy. Never have been. But my girlfriend’s family has this tradition every summer. A weekend camping trip to some state park two hours outside the city. Tents, sleeping bags, bug spray, the whole deal. I’d been with her for two years, so by now I was expected to show up and pretend I enjoyed sleeping on the ground.
This year, the weather had other plans. We got there Friday afternoon. Set up the tent. Unpacked the cooler. Built a fire that I was disproportionately proud of. By 9 PM, the sky started looking weird. By 10, the rain started. By 11, we were all huddled in our separate tents, listening to water hammer the nylon above our heads. The forecast said it would clear by morning. It didn’t. Saturday was a wash. Mud everywhere, no fire possible, everybody grumpy and damp. By Saturday afternoon, I’d had enough. I was sitting in the tent with my phone, trying to find a signal. The campground had spotty reception at best. I held my phone up near the tent flap, watching the bars flicker. One bar. Two bars. Then nothing. Then one bar again. I managed to get online long enough to check the forecast. More rain. All night. And tomorrow. The group chat was already buzzing with people talking about packing up early. I was ready to be the first one to say yes. But my girlfriend was asleep. She’d crashed out after lunch, exhausted from a sleepless night. I was stuck in the tent with nothing to do but listen to the rain and watch my phone battery slowly drain. I started scrolling. Anything to pass the time. I ended up on a casino site I’d used a few times before. Nothing regular. Just when I had some downtime and felt like playing a few hands. I’d bookmarked it on my phone months ago. I clicked the link, but the site wouldn’t load. Connection was too weak. I tried again. Nothing. Then I remembered something. A buddy at work had mentioned that sometimes you needed a different address when the main one was blocked or slow. He’d sent me a link once. I scrolled back through my texts and found it. A Vavada casino mirror address. I clicked it. The site loaded. Slow, but it loaded. I had one bar of signal, a sleeping girlfriend, and hours of rain ahead of me. Good enough. I checked my account. I had about thirty bucks in there from a previous deposit I’d never finished playing through. Leftover funds I’d forgotten about. I figured I’d play some blackjack, low stakes, something to do while the rain kept falling. I sat down at a table with a five-dollar minimum. The dealer was a woman with a friendly voice and a slow deal that matched the pace of the afternoon. I played conservatively. Won a hand, lost a hand. The balance moved up and down but stayed in the same range. I wasn’t chasing anything. I was just playing. The rain on the tent was loud. The air was cool. My girlfriend was breathing softly next to me. It was peaceful, in its own weird way. After about twenty minutes, I won three hands in a row. Nothing huge, but enough to push my balance to fifty dollars. I raised my bet slightly. Won another. Sixty. Raised it again. Won another. Eighty. Then I got a hand. Dealer showed a five. I had a pair of fours. Eight against a five. Textbook double down? No. Split? Not great either. I should have just hit. But something told me to split. I put up the extra bet, split the fours. First hand: I hit, got a seven. Eleven. Double down. Got a ten. Twenty-one. Second hand: I hit, got a six. Ten. Double down. Got an ace. Twenty-one. The dealer flipped a ten, then drew a queen. Twenty-five. Bust. I won both hands. The double downs doubled the win. My balance jumped from eighty to two hundred and forty dollars in a single hand. I stared at the screen. Then I looked at my girlfriend. Still asleep. I looked at the tent flap. Still raining. I looked back at my phone. Two hundred and forty dollars. From thirty dollars I’d forgotten I had. In a tent. In the middle of a state park. With one bar of signal. I cashed out immediately. The withdrawal confirmation took forever to load with the weak signal, but it went through. I put my phone down, leaned back against my sleeping bag, and listened to the rain for a long time. When my girlfriend woke up, I told her we should pack up and head out. She agreed without hesitation. We stopped for dinner on the way home. A diner off the highway. I paid for both of us with some of the cash I’d pulled out that morning. She asked where I’d gotten the money. I told her I’d had it saved. Which was true. I just didn’t mention where it came from. I still use that Vavada casino mirror link when I need it. Mostly when I’m traveling, when the main site doesn’t load, when I’m stuck somewhere with time to kill. I don’t play often. But every time I do, I think about that camping trip. The rain. The tent. The hand where I split fours against a five and somehow it worked out perfectly. My girlfriend still wants me to go camping every summer. I still go. I still pretend I enjoy it. But now I have a backup plan for when the weather turns. A little something to do while the rain falls and the rest of the world waits for it to stop. |
